Elementary Education

Career facts

The suggested curriculum includes degree requirements and courses that are usually completed in the first two years of a four-year curriculum. Consult with the university or college of your choice and its catalog curriculum as you make plans on where to transfer. Be careful to select the courses that will meet all requirements for both the associate and baccalaureate degree programs.

The Elementary Education program provides the core courses that develop the foundation for a major field of study, plus general education courses.

In addition to the general education requirements, Elementary Education coursework focuses on preparing students for teacher certification exams.  Electives include foreign language, statistics, math structures, intro to literature, grammar for educators, art appreciation, and music appreciation.

Who is a good fit?

Job skills differ depending on the grade you hope to teach but in general, elementary school teachers need to know how to encourage and communicate well with young children in order to help them develop in their earliest academic years. Since school children learn intellectually and behaviorally at their own pace, a high level of patience is needed for the job.  In most classrooms, the elementary teacher covers all subjects--reading, math, social studies, science, language arts, and more.
