Soccer athletes earn NOC player of the week honors
Sophomore Justin Miles of Enid earned his second nomination this season as Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa soccer men’s player of the week.
Sarah Blakley, Enid, and Alma Figueroa, Kaufman, Texas, share the soccer women’s player of the week honor. Both women are sophomores.
Head Men’s Coach Michael DuRoy and Head Women’s Coach Josh Smith announced the selections for the week ending Oct. 18.
Miles, a defender, “has had to play out of position all season due to the Mavs missing several players and has done an amazing job,” DuRoy said. “He scored a goal this week against Eastern Oklahoma State College.”
“Sarah and Alma led the Mavericks to a 1-0 win over Eastern.” Smith said. “Alma created a lot of chances up top for us. Her creativity and work rate kept the Eastern defense guessing all game.
“Sarah led the back line in securing a shutout. Sarah also provided a lot of positive distributions in the second half to help secure the win.”
Blakley plays defense and Figueroa plays midfield/forward position.
The women, ranked 12th nationally, are 12-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The men’s record is 5-10-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play after a 1-2 loss to Eastern.
Both teams play Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College at home Oct. 22 with women playing at 2 p.m. and men playing at 4 p.m.
