The Mavericks won their sixteenth Region 2 Championship on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. A strong south wind influenced the game, and NEO took the wind in the first half, but Northern was able to control most of the game going into the wind. Despite several chances for Northern neither team could score in the first half. It didn't take the Mavs long to take advantage of the wind in the second half as Rickardo Oldham blasted a long free kick off the crossbar and Theo Ostas followed up the rebound with a goal. Moments later Anthony Walker would put the game away with a goal assisted by Tyler Hall. The Mavericks placed six players on the All Region 2 Tournament team: goalkeeper, Roberto Molina; midfielder, Edgar Delgadillo; defender, Brian Pinnock; defender, Tyler Hall; forward, Theo Ostas; and Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Rickardo Oldham.
Mavericks Win Conference Championship
Northern escaped an upset bid by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami with a hard fought 3-2 win. The win clinches the Oklahoma Colligate Athletic Conference title for the 19th ranked Mavs, and ran their unbeaten streak to ten games. NEO controlled much of the play early on in the game, but it was the Mavericks who would score first. Brad Bennions crossed the ball in to Theo Ostas who headed the ball back across the goal to Andy Ochoa who headed the ball into the net. Late in the half Tyler Hall dribbled into the box and his shot was blocked by a Norseman defender out to the top of the box. Edgar Delgadillo blasted a one touch shot into the top of the net to put Northern up 2-0. NEO gained some momentum scoring a goal with just twenty-three seconds left in the half. The Norsemen would tie the game early in the second half with a nice volley on a free-kick. The game looked destined for overtime until Theo Ostas brought down a ball in the NEO box and laid it off to Anthony Walker, who ripped a shot past the goalkeeper for the game winner with just seven minutes left on the clock.
