NEO Upsets Northern In Region 2 Championship

Northern's season came to an end when NEO upset the Mavericks in the Region 2 Championship 3-2 in overtime.  The Norsemen entered the game as the fourth seed in Region 2 having upset Rose State College in the first game.  Northern came into the game as the second seed having beaten Eastern Oklahoma State College 3-2 in overtime the previous night.  Rojay Smith scored in the second minute of the game to put the Mavericks up 1-0.  NEO scored twice to go up 2-1, but the Mavs would tie the game when Prince Afriyie was fouled in the box and Rojay Smith converted the penalty kick.  The game went into overtime tied 2-2.  NEO was awarded a penalty kick with four seconds left in the first overtime when the Mavs fouled a Norseman player at the top of the penalty box.  NEO converted the penalty to win the game 3-2.  It is just the fourth time in the twenty year history of the program that Northern has failed to win the Region 2 Championship and just the fifth time in history that the Mavs have lost to the Norseman.  Northern ends the year with a record of 11-6-2.  Seven of the games went to overtime and five of the six losses were by one goal.
