“Selected Works,” an exhibit of watercolor paintings and mixed media collage prints by Caryl Morgan, owner of Earth Road Graphics Design Studio in Newkirk, is currently on view at Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa.
The exhibit is located in the Eleanor Hays Art Gallery of the Kinzer Performing Arts Center. Regular gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and during evening performances in the KPAC. Admission is free. Many of her works are for sale.
Gallery director Audrey Schmitz invites the public to meet the artist Tuesday, Oct. 25 when Morgan will speak at 12:30 p.m. in the gallery. On that date the exhibit will open at 12 noon.
Morgan, a fulltime artist who is currently the vice president of the Watercolor USA Honor Society, describes herself as a contemporary watercolor artist. “I feel that most people think of watercolor painting as quick transparent washes and landscapes… watercolor today is a strong painting genre of its own. Applied to contemporary subjects and styles the media allows the artist to create vivid paintings that are illuminated by the paper beneath the paint.”
Currently she is working with vintage signage as subject matter. “There is a haunting allure in seeing a sign that remains in place long after the business has faded,” she says. “I like to select angled perspectives with strong shadow and contrast to show the viewer that art can be found in life by looking at different perspectives. My most recent paintings are of travel icon signage found near our nation’s interstate system. The common thread in all of these works is color and reflected light.”
She is preparing for a solo show in the North Gallery of the Oklahoma State Capitol, opening Dec. 5.
